Mo st of the practice bombs used by air forces deviate in size, shape and weight from the operational ones.

Concept and technical solution
To enhance the quality of the training the proposed MK-82 PAB have the same physical characteristics (weight, outer shape contour, center of gravity, computer interface - ballistic code, lug spacing, etc.) as the "live" bombs. To achieve the same mass properties as the corresponding GP bomb high-density inert fill will be used.
Operational/training warheads adaptation (such as LASER, JDAM) is optional.

Performance and Technical Benefits
The proposed MK-82 PAB provides:

  • Training closely simulating actual bombing
  • Day/night assessment of bombing performance by using a signal cartridge activated on PAB impact
  • Option of autonomic/guided weapon training
  • Realistic and effective ground crew training

Economical Benefits

  • More effective training
  • Compare with alternative real bomb usage - improved safety
  • Lower cost than the existing products

Potential Market
Most major air forces.

Status: The MK-82 application is under development. Detailed design is being performed by IAI's engineering group as a sub contractor. A Production Cooperation Agreement was signed with a local manufacturer.

Future developments: MK-80 Series (PDF file) of the PAB.
