Missile Approach Warning System (MAW-300)
Saab Avitronics
The MAW-300 system significantly enhances aircraft survivability in hostile air defence environments, by supplying accurate and timely warnings of approaching missiles. This capability can be extended by including radar and laser warning.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
A unique optical design, incorporating state-of-the-art filter technology, with purpose-built image-intensifier tubes and photon-counting focal-plane array processors ensures high sensitivity, which equates to long detection range. Each sensor is served by a dedicated high performance digital signal processor, making use of highly pipelined command execution and parallel processing.
The MAW-300 uses a distributed, hierarchical data-processing architecture to ensure optimal utilization of information in real-time. Digitization and pre-processing functions are performed right at the detector using an advanced focal-plane processor, each sensor's data is transferred to a dedicated digital signal processor. At this stage equalization, segmentation and feature extraction operations are executed. Each sensor processor can track and process several potential targets, passing the spatial and temporal feature data to a controller, where spatial data is integrated with real-time INS information to compensate for platform movement, attitude and altitude.
The controller then executes sophisticated neural net pattern recognition algorithms to ensure accurate operation with exceedingly low false alarm rates.
