Sensor-to-Shooter Functional Chains

Conflict scenarios are changing and with them the role of modern conventional submarines. Transformation – the adaptation to changing framework conditions to increase mission capability – does not have a defined end status but is a continuous process. If in the past decades, combat scenarios against massive conventional forces played the most important role, today, the emphasis is more on information retrieval, thwarting terrorist threats, asymmetric warfare and thus constantly changing conditions. Modern submarines are in a position to meet these challenges.

Submarine building is changing too. Modern conventional submarines are radically different from their predecessors. Extremely quiet submarines with air-independent propulsion which can remain submerged for weeks and are practically impossible to locate, are of vital importance for many navies today, when it comes to C4ISR.

A new generation of sensors with purely passive operation provides hydroacoustic data from distances which would have been considered unattainable just a few years ago. New weapon systems, especially the fourth generation high-speed heavy-weight torpedoes with fibre-optic links to submarines are giving them a large bandwidth and making them resistant to interference and decoys, make modern submarines a major threat for every enemy.

Modern command and weapon control systems master the flood of data and provide operators with a precise picture of the situation at all times, together with all the other information they need for supporting tasks. New methods of communication make it possible to integrate the submarines within military networks as a prerequisite for Network Centric Warfare.

Linking all these capabilities in a sensor-to-shooter functional chains is the domain of ATLAS ELEKTRONIK.
