Tactical Power Sources - Dr. Arvind Varma of Purdue University Discusses Alternative Energy Sources for the Military, Dec 2010
New York, NY – December 10, 2010 – The average Warfighter consumes 88 AA batteries over the course of a 5-day mission and the military uses approximately 2.4 million gallons of fuel every day in Afghanistan. New technological breakthroughs to power devices and machinery are at the forefront in the long war with the key thrusts being to reduce weight, increase efficiency, and outlast mission durations, all at the lowest cost possible.
In keeping with these developments, Dr. Arvind Varma, Head of the School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University spoke with IDGA’s Senior Editor Nick Yonker on tactical power sources and alternative energy technologies with defense and military applications. He talks specifically about hydrogen power cells that could have use for dismounted soldiers as well as in military vehicles. Dr. Varma details uses as well as challenges in developing and employing these systems. In addition, he also speaks about where he sees future efforts with R & D heading and what timelines he sees as practical for fielding this type of equipment. The complimentary podcast has been made available here.
Furthermore, IDGA has secured an exclusive report courtesy of Tactical Defense Media entitled Beyond Power: U.S. DoD seeks increased power and on-board energy efficiencies for its legacy and future ground vehicles fleets. This is a great article that talks in-depth about energy issues facing vehicles across multiple services. It is free to download and has never been released to the public until now.
Dr. Varma will deliver a briefing at this year's 8th Annual Tactical Power Sources Summit taking place January 24-27, 2011 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, Arlington, VA.
